What Ansel Adams taught me

I came to photography through books rather than a camera — and the book that hooked me was on Ansel Adams. What stayed with me was not the grandeur of Yosemite but the discipline: the idea that a photograph is imagined before it is taken, and made again in the print.

Decades later, photographing the gentler scenery of Wessex and the West Country, that lesson still governs how I work — slowly, deliberately, and in service of the light.
